Sun Moon

Sun Moon, a TV commercial for Own Your C, uses organic two-dimensional animation and natures ripple effect as a metaphor for how one action can INFLUENCE the environment immediately around us. It directs viewers to ownyourC.com.

This Is Where We Live

Welcome to our city – to our world – of books. This is where we live.

A film for 4th Estate Publishers’ 25th Anniversary. Produced by Apt Studio and Asylum Films.

The film was produced in stop-motion over 3 weeks in Autumn 2008. Each scene was shot on a home-made dolly by an insane bunch of animators; you can see time-lapse films of each sequence being prepared and shot in our other films.

Intro: From Cowboy To Astronaut

Intro: From Cowboy To Astronaut

Over the past couple of years I’ve given a presentation to college students entitled “From Cowboy to Astronaut.”

This presentation details some of the things I’ve learned during the progression of my days as a student at Oklahoma State University all the way to my current job at Barkley in Kansas City.

Previously I would spend about 10 minutes giving my history. I didn’t like the amount of time that took, yet I felt I had some important bits of information to share. So, I condensed it all into this 2 minute introductory video.

Created in After Effects CS3 with a huge 6000×6000 stitched together Google map.

Khoda

Khoda

My graduation film Khoda.
Description:
What if you watch a film and whenever you pause it, you face a painting? This idea inspired Reza Dolatabadi to make Khoda. Over 6000 paintings were painstakingly produced during two years to create a five minutes film that would meet high personal standards. Khoda is a psychological thriller; a student project which was seen as a ‘mission impossible’ by many people but eventually proved possible!

Director and art director: Reza Dolatabadi
Written by Reza Dolatabadi & Mark Szalos Farkas
Animation by Adam Thomson
Music by Hamed Mafakheri

My email address:
khdownes@hotmail.com

Okay, so down here in Australia most people say “see-ga” rather than “say-ga”. Plus; I totally think that voice at the start of the Megadrive games sounds a whole lot more like “see-ga” or “seh-gah”, than “say-ga”

This is my major project for 3rd year BA(multimedia) at RMIT (which I graduate from this year), created over about 4 months.

Software used: Maya 8.5, After Effects, Premiere, Illustrator, Photoshop and Flash.

All modelling/texturing/lighting, animating and compositing done by me.

Voice over by Josh Molenkamp, who was kind enough to record for me while I was helping him with his 2nd year project.

Help thinking up some of the jokes by Emily Spehar (thanks!).

Bodysnatchers - Zeno Music Visualiser

This is my first attempt at music visualisation, using the Processing programming language, building on the Zeno animation system I’ve been developing for my first two videos Music is Math and Metamorphosis. This time it’s Radiohead with their Bodysnatchers track from In Rainbows.

What has helped this particular form of music visualisation is that it’s already based on a pre-existing generative animation system, so the audio reaction just adds another dimension. It’s a 50/50 generative + audio reactive piece.

The Octopus Project “I Saw The Bright Shinies”

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

The Octopus Project

Animated by Austin illustrator Divya Srinivasan, this video depicts three sleepy ghost kids following a heterochromic fox through a snowy twilight. When the group discovers an impromptu critter disco in a forest clearing, the spirits and strays dance in harmony until a cranky babushka bemoans the noise and breaks up the party. Thus, the spectral youths return to the astral plane… but not without a final farewell to their new found animal friends.

The song is from The Octopus Project’s album “Hello, Avalanche,” released in 2007 on Peek-A-Boo Records.

Water Curses

This is not the official music video. It’s just a fan video I made.

The song is “Water Curses” by Animal Collective. I started making this in an attempt to learn Flash cs3. There are two basic layers in this animation, a flash layer at 24fps, and a stop motion powderd charcoal layer at 12fps. They are mixed together in nifty ways with After Effects.

I can’t seem to get the video to look as good on vimeo as id like. so if you really want to see it clear in hd, just download the source video.

you can read more about this video here musictovideo.blogspot.com/2008/10/water-curses.html

no tweening was used in the making of this video

I Live To Let You Shine

For Seb.

<3

The story of star’s journey to turn into the sun.

(*This is the first time I’ve ever illustrated and animated anything in its entirety in Illustrator and After Effects on my own, so I apologize for the shotty animation and the poor illustrations…I’m still learning.)

Over 100 layers in AE, 10 hours of painstaking self-learning, rendering, exporting, 3 glasses of wine, impatience, 2 cups of coffee, and four puffy spicy Cheetos.
